Georges Braque was born on May 13, 1882 in France.  He began his career as a house painter working for his father in France.  He later moved to Paris where he studied at the Humbert Academy.

Braque helped to invent Cubism with his friend Pablo Picasso.  Cubists broke their pictures up into shapes.  Braque was one of the first to

experiment with looking at shapes as geometric and abstract.  He would also present several views at the same time.  He wanted the viewer to move around in his paintings. Braque sometimes glued printed paper or other objects into his paintings.

Braque is also known for Analytic Cubism.  This style breaks

objects up into cubes and fragments along a grid.  Once again the subject is seen from many viewpoints.

After World War I, Braque's style changed.  It became more brilliantly colored and the surfaces more textured.

Georges Braque died in Paris on August 31, 1963.
