FOREGROUND
is the part of a work of art that appears to be in front or nearest the viewer.
Objects or images in the foreground are larger and are the main focus of the picture. They usually sit lower in the picture.
BACKGROUND
is the part of a work of art that appears to be in the distance, far away from the viewer.
Objects or images in the background are smaller than other objects because they are supposed to be way in the back of the picture. Background images are not the main focus. They add details to it.
The man watering the flowers is the main focus of the picture. He is located in the foreground.
The bushes, flowers, and trees in the background help to make the picture look complete.
The figures in this picture are closest to the viewer and are the biggest images in the picture. The artist wanted them to be the main focus of his picture.
