Roy Lichtenstein was born on October 27, 1923 in New York City.  He was an art teacher and a commercial artist.  He taught art at Ohio State University and at several other schools in Ohio and New York.

Lichtenstein and Andy Warhol are the great artists of the Pop Art Movement.  He based his artwork on comic strips, advertising and gum wrappers.  He is famous for

images of romance, science fiction, and violent military scenes from comic strips.  Lichtenstein even used words in talk balloons like comic artists used.  He wanted to allow his characters to talk to the viewers.  The main difference was Lichtenstein worked large scale with many of his paintings mural size.

Lichtenstein not only painted he also made

lithographs, screen prints, etchings, and woodcuts.

Roy Lichtenstein died on September 29, 1997 at the age of 73.
