Rene Magritte was born on November 21, 1898 in Belgium.  He studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Belgium.

Magritte had his first one man show in 1927.  At this time he had already begun to paint in the surrealist style of painting.  Magritte painted everyday objects, but changed them into extraordinary images.  Some examples of the remarkable images he created are - a

large apple the size of a room, boots that turn into feet, a tree with a man's face growing out of the trunk, and ordinary objects covering people's faces.  Magritte combined these fantastic objects with bright, colorful paints to create an even more unreal world.

Magritte was a skillful technician who is known for his works that give familiar objects new meaning by placing them in unfamiliar and unexpected settings.

Rene Magritte liked to create a sense of mystery within his paintings by covering the face of the person in the painting.  He often used common objects like apples or birds to cover the person's face.

Magritte died on August 15, 1967 at the age of 69.
