Pablo Picasso was born on October 25, 1881 in Spain.  His father was an art teacher, who encouraged his son pursue his art dreams.  Picasso studied art at the Royal Academy in Madrid.  Picasso worked with many materials from sculpture, to graphics, to ceramics, to drawing, to painting.

He moved to Paris to study.  During this time he felt sad and

depressed because he was not making money on his paintings.  This became his Blue Period (1901-1904).  He focused on themes of loneliness and despair.  Picasso used blue paint to show the emotions he was feeling.

Picasso helped to invent the style of painting known as Cubism.  He and his friend Georges Braque are the founders of Cubism.  He broke his subjects up into

basic geometric shapes.  His paintings are flat and colorful.  His subjects appear to show many angles at the same time.  Picasso was concerned with shapes.

Pablo Picasso achieved fame and wealth later in his life.  He continued to paint and create until his death on April 9, 1973.  His art has achieved worldwide acclaim and continues to influence art today.
